Happy Birthday to the lovely and talented, Ms. Janelle Monae! In a meeting with my buddy DJ Acrojam, she introduced me to the music of this Afropunk cybergirl and I was instantly hooked. I immediately brought her sounds to the attention of our mentor, George Clinton, and he loved it. A couple months later, I was invited to attend the BMI Urban Music Awards in NYC as George's guest as he was being honored that night. Lo and behold, one of the presentors was Janelle Monae, doing a rendition of "Not Just Knee Deep"--how cool is that?
I had the opportunity to introduce myself to her and exchange a few words about Metropolis. Backstage, I noticed one of her bandmates (who I later discovered to be the equally amazing Chuck Lightning, whose birthday is tomorrow) as he was asking another P-Funk pal of mine to listen to his music--legendary guitarist, Michael Hampton. As I walked past, I leaned over to Mike and told him, "Mess with these kids. They're AWESOME."
Since then, I've had the opportunity to hang with their crew from time to time, including Nate Rocket's birthday party in Atlanta as pictured above (in case you couldn't tell, Janelle, me, and the rest of the partygoers got LOOSE that night! lol).
About 5 years later, Janelle is, needless to say, a world class, well-recognized figure, and I'm honored to have crossed powers with this android phenom.
Happy Birthday, Dear Jane, from Wind Planet and all the ninja and cybergirls of the world!
